Growing up, I struggled with a poor self image. This was not because there was nothing to like about me, infact I had a lot going for myself. I grew up in a wonderful family hearing consistent words of affirmation from my parents and siblings, I was a child who topped her class, I was really good at a number of things, won prizes here and there, I was basically the type of person who should have been really very happy with who they were.
Well, that being said, although externally I appeared to have it all great, inside me, I found it easier looking at what was not right, my mind focused on the imperfections, I was self conscious, magnifying my flaws, trying to be a better version of me. Fundamentally I just had a sense of not being good enough. This affected me in many ways. It made me second guess myself, doubt my abilities and hold back where I should have flourished.
Fastforward to the present, I now know the reason why I perceived my image that way. It was because I was looking in the WRONG MIRROR!
Becoming Super Confident
You know how you can look in different mirrors and see yourself in different ways right? There are some mirrors that make you look slimmer and some make you look fatter or taller, lol! you get the picture. Well you see, a lot of us especially when we become children of God still perceive ourselves and look at ourselves through the wrong mirror.
I became confident, actually super confident and at peace with myself and in love with who I had become, when i realised who I really was in the MIRROR OF THE WORD of my Father God. I saw that God made me perfect in Christ (Hebrews 10;14). What do I mean? I began to see clearly who God made me in my Spirit. I began to see who I truly was as his offspring. This is so key, because when you know your intrinsic value, your fundamental nature, the core of the truth of who you are, then your identity will not hinge on anything that is physical or ephemeral. This will give you an assurance, boldness, peace and joy. You will not need to ever strive for significance from anything or anyone else. You will not need to try to prove yourself over anything, you won’t need to work for acceptance, you won’t seek affirmation or approval from any other source. It is liberating. You become free to be all you were made to be.
The Confident You
Do you know we all were made spirit, soul and body? You and I are spirits like God the Father, we have a soul, the location of our mind, will and emotions and we live in our bodies. You can read my post about spirit, soul and body to understand this better.
When you became a child of God, your spirit was recreated anew in Christ. All things became new. You received a new identity. This is the real you. Your Spirit is perfect. You see who you really are when you look into the MIRROR OF THE WORD OF GOD your Father and creator.
Embracing your new identity, will see you soaring ahead with all confidence! Read about your identity in my post on identity in Christ. To embrace your identity, you just need to renew your mind to the truth of who you really are. A mindset change is all you require for the transformation process. To know more about the process of mind renewal or changing your mindset about you, see part 1 of my3 part mind renewal series here.
What does It Look Like To See With The Right Mirror?
Gideon and Jeremiah in the bible show what I mean. Its intriguing to see!
Gideon had always perceived himself as “THE LEAST IN HIS FATHER’S HOUSE”
Judges 6;15
And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am least in my father’s house.
but when God called him, He called Gideon “MIGHTY MAN OF VALOUR!”.
Judges 6:12
And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
Jeremiah also had his encounter with seeing himself in the mirror of God’s word. When God spoke to Him, Jeremiah said he COULD NOT SPEAK because he was JUST A CHILD!
“Ah Lord God! behold I cannot speak for I am a child” Jeremiah 1:7.
But when God, showed him who he truly was in the mirror of his word. He realised he wasn’t just a child who could not speak, but a SPEAKER TO NATIONS.
Jeremiah 1:5
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
