Hello, how have you been? Have you got kids? little ones, or older ones? Well i have got a 2 year old who will be turning 3 soon. He has truly been a blessing. He has added so much joy and laughter to our lives.
When I look at my son, I desire many things for Him, but the ultimate thing I want for him, is to know Father God, grow in the knowledge of Him and the knowledge of His love.
As a parent, looking through scriptures I saw I had a huge responsibility to introduce God to my son’s mind.
I have been doing a number of things with my son since he was born to introduce Father God, but in recent times, I began to ask God, okay, am i doing enough? can i do more? How have others with good results approached this? So I thought to share some of the answers i received.
First of all, here are some things I do with my child.
Practical ways I Teach My 2 Year Old about God
- I make bible reading fun and we do it everyday, at other times and not just bed time. So he realises it is not for just sleep but for life as he knows it. lol.
- When we read the bible i ask him “WHO IS THIS”, rather than “WHAT IS THIS”, when we see the word GOD, because God told me, that those 3 words are enough for him to reveal himself to my 2 year old because He is His word. Halleluyah!
- i sing a lot of songs with him. Songs i created about God, and songs we’ve learnt from other sources. Singing is a great way to get information stored in a 2 year old’s mind.
- I do a lot of dancing, and dramatising of scripture stories. Remember, make it lots of fun!
- I point out the stars, the moon, the sun, all of creation and always ask him who made them and we answer God. Well i answered this for a longtime, now he is getting it. yes!
- We have always selected youtube christian content, where he has learnt a lot. You can check out Freedom kids bible basics, bible adventures, beginner’s bible stories, the rizers and lots more.
- I make declarations over my son and also get him to speak over himself with scriptures i have taught him.
Parental Responsibility for a Child’s knowledge of God
I had a chat recently with one of my sisters about how grateful we were for our mum who was CONSISTENT with ensuring we had family devotions day and night, where we all had to read scriptures and we would talk about what we read. This definitely formed a bedrock for our knowledge of God.
Here are some scriptures that really emphasize this parental responsibility to teach our children about God.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9
6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
Proverbs 22:6
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Examples of Successful Parental Influence
A FRIEND: I asked a good friend of mine for some insight. His son is about 10years old and so full of the word, with an observed impact on his attiudes. He encouraged me and told me, “teach your child the knowledge of God, then the Love of God will come later”. Wow! deep. So him and his wife, were very committed to spending time with their son daily, reading his bible to him that was suited to his age, and as he got older, they would explain how the words he read could be applied to his daily life. Many times they shut off TV. One key thing i picked up was they were CONSISTENT in teaching their son.
MOSES: A friend of mine shared in her book kingdom naturalisation the effect of the influence of Godly parenting in Moses and that has stuck with me. Moses was born and trained in the Egyptian educational system, he grew to become a prince of Egypt but his mum was there on the scene, in the background by the divine orchestration of God, teaching him about the God of the Hebrews. Regardless of the educational system, though he wa a prince of Egypt, he was a HEBREW AT HEART. He knew who he was. This is very encouraging for us who have kids being educated in a society who have no knowledge of God. Your teaching is vital and necessary for your children to know the truth of God and be solidly rooted in their Identity in God.
TIMOTHY: Timothy had a rich heritage of Godly parenting. His mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois, were mentioned as being full of faith. 2Tim 1:5
Then Paul went on to mention that the effect of the teaching he had received as a child was key to Timothy being all he was. Most definitely would have come from those mothers!
2Timothy 3;15
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
My Conclusion
So basically, God reinforced the truth to me that all i was doing was very important and WILL ultimately yield good results! praise God!!.
